November! Autumn! Falling leaves? The smell of firewood burning in the fireplace. The turkey and dressing, all the fixin’s, and pecan pie are just a few days away. The Christmas holidays are on the horizon. Don’t you just love this time of year? I certainly do.
Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day in America. We will cast our vote for those who will be leading our state and our nation in their respective positions. In Joshua 24:15 Joshua asked God’s people to “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve” and then courageously announced; “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Our choice on Tuesday is a little bit different. We might say; “We will choose for ourselves this day whom will serve you, your family, and this great nation of ours, the United States of America.” What a choice we have before us! We have the privilege to cast our vote to elect the ones whom we trust to serve us for the next session. May God bless us with wisdom and courage as we cast our vote and then trust that His will be done. God is our all in all. We can take full confidence in the knowledge that “there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God” (Romans 13:1). In all things we are to “do what is good, and you will have praise from the same” (rulers, authorities). I’m glad about that.
We began a new Sunday morning sermon series on Sunday entitled “Walking in the Light as He is in the Light.” We are taking the word
L-I-G-H-T and looking at each letter to find how and if we are living our lives the way we should as Christians. Today we will look at the “L” in LIGHT – “Walking in the LOVE of Jesus.” Love is our supreme objective, our supreme action, and our supreme replication. Above everything is the love of God to us and us to Him. Do you remember the principles of love we find in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians? Love is patient and kind, does not envy or parade itself, is not arrogant or rude, does not seek its own but seeks what is best of another, is not angry or evil, does not rejoice in sin, but rejoices in the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, and never fails. Am I walking in the LIGHT as He is in the light?
On Sunday evenings at 5:00 we are measuring our gratitude. After all, Thanksgiving in less than 3 weeks away. I want to be thankful and show gratitude today and every day. When I remember the past, I am thankful. When I appreciate the present, I am thankful. When I decide for the future, I am thankful. The Bible tells us in Psalm 107 “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for His is good! For His mercy endures forever.” God hands are so much bigger than ours and He is ready, willing, and able to help us in every situation in life. We may not always be able to choose the chances and changes that come our way, but we can choose to trust in God and allow Him to lead us to, in, and through to a better day. MB
