Hello. Welcome. Fall has arrived. The leaves are really falling now, and we can feel it in the air. Thank the Lord for the rain we received recently. God is good.
The Countywide Gospel Meeting was a great success last week (October 9-12). We are thankful to our speakers for their preparation and presentation of Jesus: The Man and the Plan and to the Downtown congregation for doing such a good job hosting this annual event. Harding Street will be hosting the meeting in October 2023. Thank you also for every member of the Harding Street congregation for your support. Hearing such wonderful lessons from the Bible helps us all to walk closer to Jesus every day.
Our Sunday morning sermon series “Come to Jesus” continued on Sunday as we answered Question #3 – How can I commit myself to Jesus? It breaks my heart to hear some people say that salvation is “free” when Jesus Himself told us about the cost of being His disciple. Salvation by grace through faith is a gift, but certainly not free, not free to God and not free to us. In Luke 14:25-33 we read that Jesus expects those who follow Him to always choose Him first, first over parents, spouse, children, and siblings and then says, “And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” Jesus’ great invitation in Matthew 11:28-30 states, “Come to Me.” Then He says, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me.” Just what does it cost us to be a Christian? I must give up a sinful lifestyle. I must give up a “self-controlled” life for a “Christ-controlled life.” I must give up the world in order to have and hold Jesus. There is also a terrible cost to choose any other path but Jesus. Come to Jesus. He will save you.
On the evening at 5:00 we looked at the third lesson in our series “Lord Give Me Wisdom. I Need It.” Wisdom is appreciating God’s word. Wisdom is appropriating God’s word. Wisdom is also ASSIMILATING God’s word. To assimilate is to absorb and incorporate God’s word in our lives, to take it in, to learn it, understand it, and to become all that God leads us to become. Being a Christian is not just something we do. It is something we are. We looked at David’s wisdom, Paul’s wisdom, and Timothy’s wisdom to see. MB
