Hello. Welcome. Cindi and I made a quick trip just outside Washington D.C. in Brambleton, Virginia today visiting family celebrating our grandson’s 16th birthday. Brother Bane preached this past Sunday and as always did an outstanding job encouraging us. He just celebrated his 82nd birthday recently and it is my prayer that God will continue to bless him and us with health and success. I am thankful for all God’s rich blessings in my life. God is so good to us all.
Close your eyes for a moment and “see” and hear Jesus up on a mountain sitting down with all the disciples around Him saying; “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” He did say it and Matthew wrote it to you and me and to everyone so the world will come to know Him and live the best way to live.
I visited with the Downtown congregation last Wednesday evening as they finished out their Summer Sermon Series to preach on the fact that Jesus is the Light of the World. And because He is the Light of the world, in Him we are lights to the world too. Take a look, if you will at just how much the Bible says about being “light” to the world. I’ll mention a few passages for your consideration in the gospel of John.: John 1:1-4, 3:16-17, 8:1-12, 9:1-5, 12:35-37. As you study the Bible note the pictures God gives us regarding the “light” representing Himself and the Christian life and “darkness” representing the enemy and a sinful life. It should not be odd to any of us that so much of the enemy’s tactics happen after the sun goes down. I can still hear my mother saying, “Son, nothing good ever happen after midnight.” She is right, too. Of course, I have had a few phone calls after midnight from some who finally decided not to spend another night in sin, away from God. I met them at the church building to baptize them into Christ.
John the beloved wrote to say that “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (I John 1:5). He goes on to teach about the difference between saying and doing when it comes to the light. “If we say that we have fellowship with Him (God), and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” I want to be in the Light, live in the Light, and have the Light in my life. Jesus is the Light.
