Today is May 1st. We made it through April. Just the other day Lily, my youngest granddaughter and I were driving from her house to ours when she said, “PopPop, did you know that nothing in life is free.” She had probably had one of those conversations with her parents. You remember? Like me, you probably had those with your parents and then with your children when they wanted all the benefits of work, but did not want to actually do the work. Today we must be very careful. Many of us are receiving what is called a “stimulus check” from the federal government. Free money! Right? Nope. Nothing in life is free. Even my 9 year old granddaughter is beginning to understand this fact. Our salvation in Christ Jesus is a gift to us. But, oh what a price that He had to pay for our “free” gift!
On the “news” they said, “If you cannot afford to pay your rent this month, or the next 3 months, no worries. A law has been signed into action that stops any eviction or repossession by your creditors.” Great! Free rent. Right? Wrong! Look out. In 3 months, your landlord or bank could tell you either pay up the entire amount due or face eviction or foreclosure. Even if they allow you to skip 3 payments, those payments will be added to the end of your contract or mortgage. And you are still paying interest on those months you skip. Nothing in life is free.
Some people are receiving unemployment due to being furloughed or “let go” from their jobs due to the government’s actions on business closures and “social distancing.” I’m perfectly on board with receiving a percentage of my salary in unemployment compensation while I look for work. But from what I hear, many people are receiving two times their regular salary from the government each week. Can they find a job making double their regular salary anywhere during these difficult times? Remember, nothing is life is free.
Enough about that. One more thing: Better put back enough of your “stimulus” money until 2021 because you will be paying taxes on it.
I hope you will continue to join Cindi and me this Sunday morning, May 3rd online on Facebook and Youtube for our worship hour together. I will be preaching on the final lesson in our series, “ARM yourselves for life and living.” We need to arm ourselves and our children with the weapons, took, equipment we need to face the challenges and opportunities that come our way in life. A – Authority, Accountability, Acceptance, Approval, and Appreciation, R – Resolve, Respect, Resilience, and Restraint, and this Sunday; M – Muscles, Manners, and Maturity. May God bless us all as we move ever forward in Christ Jesus, always trusting and obeying Him is life and living.
