Let’s talk about love. The church seems to have forgotten what this word means and what God has told us about it. There are so many stories of hateful “Christians” who condemn and berate people of all backgrounds simply because they are ignorant or so full of hate that it boils over. It is a sad sight to see. I’ve placed the term christian in quotations because a Christian who is hateful is no follower of Christ at all.
Our greatest commandment, above faith and hope, is love (I Corinthians 13:13). How can you claim to love God, yet you do not love your neighbor? The church has become hypocritical. We are not here on this Earth to judge one another. Matthew 7:1-5 explains it perfectly. Many christians focus on the speck of sawdust in their neighbor’s eye while they have to look around and ignore the plank in their own.
It has become such a widespread problem that some people use their faith as a way to spread their hate. This is wrong, disgusting, and unfortunately is how the world sees many Christians. We are ambassadors of Christ and our influence can be someone’s best reason for following Jesus or their biggest excuse to reject him (II Corinthians 5:20). We are taught from a young age that “Jesus loves me, this I know,” and that he loves everyone the same, so why do we not? John 13:34-35 puts it simply, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
I suggest listening to the song “The Greatest Commandments”. It is a beautiful song that sends a great message. God is love.
“And now these things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love” I Corinthians 13:13
