Music has always been a huge part of my life. I listen to music every day that I can and when I don’t get a chance to, my day feels off. Sundays are no different when such a prominent part of our worship is singing. If I had to pick a favorite part about our worship service, it would be singing. Music in church can be a tricky and touchy subject for most. In the Church of Christ we use our voices as our instruments in worship. Many denominations find this odd, but who said instruments were needed to praise God?
In the Bible there is no indication, no verses telling us to use instruments; however, there are verses after verses informing us to sing and make melody in our hearts (Ephesians 5:19 and Psalms 105:2). Far too many denominations put emphasis on what draws a crowd to their version of worship. Worship service should not feel like a concert you would attend for any worldly band. What is mentioned in the Bible in two separate occasions is the clear instructions to not add or take away from the word (Deuteronomy 4:2 and Revelation 22:18-19). When you add instruments to your worship you are directly disobeying this command.
I am not saying that Christian music is bad if it involves instruments, I listen to quite a few christian bands and artists; however, those songs should not be a part of a congregation’s worship service. Our service should just be between us and God. Instruments get in the way and can often cause members to not participate. Many denominations who have bands or choirs lack the total participation from all members of their congregations. How are you specifically worshipping God if you are sat idly watching others do so for you?
I hope that singing is a favorite part of everyone’s worship. God does not care if you are tone deaf. If you can speak, you can sing. We sing with our hearts. You should not worry about what others around you may think, that is their own issue they must deal with.
“Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks for all things” Ephesians 5:19-20
