Last spring, I went with the rest of the teens at Harding Street on a trip to Van Buren, Arkansas to attend the River Valley Youth Rally. The trip there was quite the adventure with dark skies, heavy rain, and the threat of tornadoes on our route. When we finally made it there—after having to make an emergency pit stop at a gas station once we could hear the sirens going off—a lesson was preached to us that still sticks with me to this day. The verse that stood out to me was Matthew 5: 13: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” The preacher stressed that salt is prominent. We all can taste when salt is present or missing. Salt causes us to be thirsty, and as Christians we should leave people thirsting for more of God’s word. We should be overflowing with what God has for us to share that it is prominent in our everyday life.
The following verse states that “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid” This is one of my favorite verses. Life can be dreary and draining. Trust me, as a college student, I agree 100%, but I carry this verse with me. I should be so full of God’s light that it cannot be hidden. People should know by the way I carry myself and how I treat others that I am a Christian. I commute to my classes everyday and on that drive I’ve sat through some beautiful mornings that have left me ready for the day and I’ve sat through some horrendous downpours that dared me to turn around and go back to bed. My favorites are the rainy days where the sun can still be seen peeking through the clouds, sometimes you can even spot a rainbow. We as the next generations of Christians need to be like the sun peeking through the darkness. Our light should be prominent.
